West Wallsend pensioners are taking action against rising power prices.

The members of the local Combined Pensioners and Superannuants Association of NSW branch will save hundreds of dollars a year off their power bills.

Arthur Middlemus, Secretary of the Association, decided that it was time to do something to reduce his power bills.

He joined the Home Power Savings Program and received expert advice and free power-saving devices that will save him at least $125 a year and 23,500 black balloons of carbon pollution.

"More than ever before, pensioners are worried about managing household bills. This program shows us – in our own home – how to get even smarter about our power use," Mr Middlemus said.

"I got an hour with an energy expert who gave me tips that will make my home more energy efficient. I was pretty surprised to find out that I could save $315 a year by only turning the fridge in the garage on when I really need it. I don't have to go without it – just use wisely.

"I also found out the best temperature for my hot water system and how much I'll save by insulating the external hot water pipes," he said.

"Of course I wanted to save money, but doing a little bit for the environment was also a benefit of joining the program."

On Arthur's advice, seven fellow members of the Association have taken part in the program and had a home power assessment. Together, they are set to save over $800 and 160,000 black balloons of carbon pollution from their free Power Savings Kits.

The free Kit available to all eligible households who take part in the program is worth $215. It contains a stand-by power board to stop power waste from TVs and DVD players, energy efficient light bulbs, a low-flow showerhead, shower timer, tap aerator, draught-proofing strips and door snakes.

All households can save money and cut carbon pollution by following these tips:

The NSW Government's Home Power Savings Program is available to anyone who has a nominated Centrelink or Veterans' Affairs Concession card, or who is a hardship customer with an energy company.

Join the program now for a chance to win a grocery voucher worth $1,000. There are five to be won. Eligible households can get more chances of winning by referring their friends. Call 1300 662 416 or browse the Home Power Savings Program section for more information.

The Save Power Challenge, what you can do now

We challenged six homes to reduce their power use over eight weeks.

To help them, energy assessors looked at their power use and habits and provided tailored action plans to show where savings could easily be made.

The household Challengers also had items from our Power Saving Kits installed as well as power monitors, so they could see how much power they were using as they used it.

The results were impressive with many of our Challengers halving their electricity use in just two months!

The Save Power Challenge was featured in the Sunday Telegraph and the Daily Telegraph, and ran September to November 2010.
