Get on top of insulation

Did you know?

Insulation is a cost-effective way to save power in your home and save money at the same time.

Up to 35 per cent of heat loss and gain from a house can be caused by a ceiling that's not insulated, which means you could be paying much more than necessary to heat and cool your home.

Big savings

Ceiling Batts help keep your home cooler in hotter days and warmer in colder days

Installing ceiling insulation can reduce your annual power bill by over $120 and lowers your household's carbon pollution by 500kg.

Ceiling insulation keeps your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter. It helps your heating and cooling systems run more efficiently, saving you money and reducing our impact on the environment.

How much insulation you need depends on where you live.

To get the most from your insulation:

Insulation in the ceiling can be found in various forms, but all work to keep the internal temperature of your home comfortable

  • consider is its R-value – the higher the R or thermal value, the better it insulates
  • choose the right type of insulation for your needs – reflective insulation (shiny foil) reflects sunlight away from the home, while bulk insulation (batts, blankets, rolls or boards) has good soundproofing qualities
  • follow the manufacturers' installation instructions – if bulk insulation is flattened it won't work as well and reflective insulation needs an air gap next to the shiny surface
  • make sure corners of ceilings, walls and floors are properly insulated – this is often where heat leaks are found
  • avoid gaps - even a small gap can reduce insulating benefits by 50 per cent
  • combine with effective window shading – keep your blinds down in summer on north-facing windows and leave them up in winter
  • consider wall insulation for the cavities of exterior walls – where there is an opportunity during home building or renovation
  • download the Your Home Renovator's Guide (PDF, 2.4MB) for tips on home insulation.

Rebates

Batts within exterior wall cavities can also keep heating and cooling costs down

The Federal Government announced a series of changes on 19 February 2010. This includes the establishment of a new household Renewable Energy Bonus Scheme to replace the Home Insulation Program.

NOTE: Ceiling insulation rebates from the NSW Climate Change Fund closed on the 30 June 2009.
