Schools Energy Efficiency Program

The Schools Energy Efficiency Program aims to help reduce carbon pollution from NSW public high schools.

It is funded by the NSW Climate Change Fund ($20 million) and the Department of Education and Training ($5 million), and is jointly delivered by the Department of Commerce, the Department of Education and Training and the Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW.

Key elements of the Schools Energy Efficiency Program include lighting upgrades and Climate Clever Energy Savers.

Lighting upgrades

  • Up to 150 NSW high schools will receive lighting upgrades by 2012
  • Upgraded schools' energy consumption for lighting will be reduced by about 28%.

The lighting upgrades will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 6,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and will save up to $870,000 in electricity bills per year. That's a saving of 120 million black balloons per year.

High schools and campuses who have received lighting upgrades, as at 30 June 2009, include:

  • Leumeah
  • Pittwater
  • Mudgee
  • Bossley Park
  • Fairvale
  • St Johns Park
  • Homebush Boys
  • Cabramatta
  • Beverly Hills Girls
  • Killara
  • Pennant Hill
  • Castle Hill
  • Carlingford
  • Epping Boys
  • Riverside Girls
  • Warilla
  • Nowra
  • Vincentia
  • Figtree
  • Wallsend Campus
  • Waratah Campus

Climate Clever Energy Savers

Climate Clever Energy Savers supports project based learning for sustainable energy use and greenhouse gas emission reduction, linked to the curriculum, in NSW government schools.

  • Climate Clever Energy Savers will provide $5 million over four years for grants and professional support to selected energy and climate change projects in government schools
  • Climate Clever Energy Savers aims to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by an additional 5% per year in participating schools
  • Climate Clever Energy Savers will be open to all NSW Government schools in 2010.
